You may or may not have read my first foray into wrenching, I swapped my summer wheels for winter wheels. It was a big deal. Everyone cheered. Anyways, today I changed my oil!

Kinja'd!!!

Over the last few months, my birthday, and Christmas, I’ve been amassing the tools and parts and oil to attempt this feat. Feeling ready, and a couple last minute trips to Advance Auto and Home Depot, I went to the auto skills center nearby this morning. I was supposed to have a friend with me and help him change his WRX oil first but he had to bail and I’ve seen enough YouTube.

Kinja'd!!!

I ended up having to wait over an hour for the lift because my friend who was supposed to help g ave bad advice. Ass. Otherwise it went smoothly. I kept it pretty clean, used the right tools, and learned some lessons for next time. I also took the time to give my underside a good examination and took pictures for future analysis. The biggest problem I ended up having was difficulty removing the filter/cover because of the surrounding body and cables. It all worked out though and I left the bay after adding ~8 qts, cleaning my tools and the area, and properly disposing of the disposables.

Kinja'd!!!

Annoyingly, the Cayman has no dipstick and I couldn’t seem to trick the electronic volume gauge to display. It’s supposed to be warmed up and people say about 15 minutes driving is enough. Also, turning the car off and on can reset it. Nothing worked. However, the oil temp was reporting as expected and I didn’t smell anything or see any leaks. So I ventured forth.

Kinja'd!!!

Some hours, a Patriots win, and a few chores later I finally got the screen to display! SUCCESS!!!

Thus ends the story of my first ever oil change and on a Porsche no less. You’re welcome.

Cayman doesn’t have an oil temperature gauge. Coolant temperature is largely irrelevant. It won’t read level until the oil temp sensor reads 200F.

At ~50F, that takes more than 20 minutes in my 997.2, in Sport mode (extra squirters engaged) keeping cruise above 3k. And in cold temps, the oil temp will drop extremely quickly.

Uhh what? That’s definitely the oil temp in the middle line of this picture.

Kinja'd!!!

Coolant temp, oil temp, oil pressure. Am I missing something?

So what tools and such does this entail? Speaking from someone who only uses a crescent wrench and a catch pan.

That’s so weird to me. My LR doesn’t have a dipstick and only reads the oil level when *cold* and the cars been off for at least 15 minutes. So much unnecessary complexity.

I used: a 3/8 ratchet with an 8mm hex attachment to remove drain plug , that ratchet and a 10" wobble extension and a 14 flute 74mm filter cover wrench for the filter cover, then a 1/2" torque wrench with a 1/2" to 3/8" converter to use the aforementioned 8mm hex to tighten the drain plug. My tool set only had the ratchet of these. I also used a thin flat head to get the filter cover o-ring off.

But the other stuff I had to acquire includes the funnel, a drain pan that I didn’t need at this garage, and safety glasses.

Seriously. I wanted so badly to bask in my success but was delayed hours while nervous about a mistake.

The Kinja experience where that picture didn’t load.

But also tells you why it won’t read. Oil temp is below 200F and car is not idling with the parking brake set (or in park.) All must be true to get it to read oil level.

That pic is from months ago and wasn’t in the OP, but I definitely had a bit of trouble getting the temp above 200. I guess that’s why the aggressive drive in sport I did later is what made it read well.

Honestly I was thinking about asking you personally for some advice after what I saw on Planet-9 wasn’t working. I just lucked into the correct formula I guess. Thanks for the info.

Designed to be fairly inconvenient. Impressive!

I’m pretty sure there’s a German word that means that very sentence, and somehow also just translates to “engineering”.

L ook at all that sexy new synthetic oil.... and you know it was done well. I’d say you have one happy Cayman.

Ah, well, that would explain it even better! I only looked briefly at the non-GTS, so could be I just forgot about that screen. But yeah, getting the oil up to temp in any Porsche is a real pain in the ass. And it turns to ice way too quickly.

I’m seriously considering making major modifications to the oil cooling setup in mine just to try and get the temperatures reasonable. Up to about 94F it tends to run 200 which is too cold. At 95F, I have to deploy the spoiler or it jumps to 250F and cooks .

Sounds like a shower temp knob. 1mm clockwise, ice, 1mm counter clockwise, embers. Not great for this application for sure

It’s almost as much fun as the coolant temperature gauge where “normal” temperature is +-25F.

That’s the accuracy of the temperature gauge. +-25degF.
